Drill Pipe: How to Select the Right String for Your Rig

Drill pipe is the most abused consumable on any drilling program. Every joint in the string is under torsional, tensile, and cyclic bending load — and the wrong pipe fails at the worst moment, in the hardest formation, on the deepest hole.

1. Match the pipe to the rig

Start with the top drive or rotary head torque rating and the pull-back capacity. A drill string that is stronger than the rig is wasted money; a string that is weaker than the rig is a failure waiting to happen. Perforator publishes torque and tensile ratings on every joint we sell — pick the one that matches your platform.

2. Match the connection to the application

• API IF, API Reg, and BECO connections handle water well and geothermal duty.
• Rotary shoulder connections — NC26, NC31, NC38, NC50 — are the mining and mineral exploration standard.
• Wireline core connections (BQ, NQ, HQ, PQ) live in exploration.

Mixed threads in the same string is the fastest way to a fishing job. Standardize.

3. Match the OD/ID to the annulus

Pipe OD sets the annulus, and the annulus sets the up-hole velocity for cuttings. Small OD in a big hole means slow uphole velocity and cuttings that fall back on the bit. Large OD in a small hole means excessive pump pressure and formation damage.

4. Buy the grade you need

Grade E, X-95, G-105, and S-135 are the common yield tiers. Deeper holes and higher torque demand higher grade — but higher grade is also more expensive and less forgiving to mishandling.

5. Stock what breaks
