Drill Pipe for Water Well and Geothermal Drilling
Pipe for water well and closed-loop geothermal programs — sized for the rig on the trailer, not the one in the brochure.
Water well and geothermal contractors buy pipe under a constraint most mine operators do not have: the rig has to fit on a residential lot, get down a driveway, and finish the hole in a day. That drives rod length down, makes handling weight a real factor, and puts a premium on connections that make up fast and clean with a helper who has been on the crew three months.
Geothermal loop fields add repetition. A hundred shallow holes on one site means the string is broken and made up more times in a week than a deep water well string sees in a month, and shoulder wear becomes the limiting factor rather than body wear. Republic supplies Perforator DTH and rotary pipe across the smaller diameters these programs run, in API and BECO thread forms, with the subs and check valves that protect the hammer.
Send the rig, the hole and the thread you run. We will spec the string and quote it.
Pipe sizes for water well and geothermal work
Smaller diameters in this list are the common water well and geothermal sizes; ask about shorter rod lengths for tight access.

What changes the spec on these programs
| Factor | Water well | Closed-loop geothermal |
|---|---|---|
| Typical depth | Deeper single holes, variable by aquifer | Shallower repeated holes across a loop field |
| Rod length | Set by mast height and casing plan | Often shorter for residential access and fast cycling |
| Wear pattern | Body and shoulder wear over a long hole | Shoulder wear from high connection counts |
| Priority | Hole integrity and casing program | Cycle time across many holes |
Subs, check valves and casing
- Check valves
- Protecting the hammer and compressor when the string is broken in wet ground.
- Bit and saver subs
- Taking the wear at a cheap component instead of at the pipe.
- Crossovers
- Running new pipe against existing yard inventory during a transition.
- Casing
- Casing within the same programme where the hole needs it.
Stocking, shipping and technical support
Republic stocks and ships from four locations — Pflugerville, Texas; Cabot, Arkansas; Tahlequah, Oklahoma; and Lisbon, Connecticut — which covers the Gulf, the mid-continent, the Southeast and the Northeast without routing every order through one warehouse. Stocked items ordered by 3pm CST ship next day. Non-stock sizes are built to order and quoted with a stated lead time.
Technical support is the same people who sell the pipe. If a string is backing off, washing out at the shoulder or failing early, we will work through torque, thread compound, make-up practice and the tooling above and below the pipe before we sell you more of it.
- Four stocking points
- TX, AR, OK and CT, so freight lanes are short in most of the country.
- NEXT-DAY SHIP
- Stocked items ordered BY 3PM CST ship the next business day.
- Field service
- Republic service techs support the rigs the pipe runs on, not just the pipe.
- Failure review
- Send us the failed joint and we will read the break before you re-order.
How to get pipe quoted
Send the rig make and model, the hole diameter and depth you are drilling, the hammer or bit sub thread you are running, and the rod length your mast and handling system can take. That is enough to price a string. If you are replacing pipe on an existing rig, a photo of the box and pin and a thread gauge reading will confirm the connection faster than a part number from a previous supplier.
Quotes come back with pipe, connection, wall and any subs or crossovers required to make the string work with tooling you already own. Where a size is not on the shelf, the quote states the build and transit lead time rather than an availability promise we cannot hold.
- Rig and hammer
- Make, model, top drive or rotary head thread, and the hammer or bit sub in use.
- Hole program
- Diameter, target depth, angle, and the formation you expect to fight.
- Handling
- Rod length the mast, carousel or rod handler can accept, and single vs. double.
- Existing string
- Connections already in the yard, so crossovers keep the old iron working.
Frequently asked
What drill pipe do water well contractors run?
Open
Most run single-wall DTH pipe in the smaller diameters with API REG or BECO connections, with rod length set by mast height and the casing program. Republic quotes the string against the rig rather than by size alone.
Is geothermal loop drilling different for pipe selection?
Open
Yes. Loop fields cycle a string through many shallow holes, so shoulder wear from repeated make-up drives the spec more than body wear, and shorter rods often suit residential access better.
Can I get pipe shipped next day?
Open
Stocked items ordered by 3pm CST ship the next business day from Pflugerville TX, Cabot AR, Tahlequah OK or Lisbon CT.
